Helen Hutchinson, Traveller poet and storyteller,  Wed 19 April, 6.30-7.30pm

Helen lives in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and will be joining is as our guest storyteller at our dlr Yarnspinners on Wed 19 April at 6.30pm.

Helens writes about her life through poetry and loves the sharing stories. She says: “We were the first of the travelling people to be housed in 1967 under the Charlie regime with the attempt at that time to house all travellers which I know now as assimilation. As the first family we also paid the price. I've lost six members of my family through discrimination, suppression and racism. Being housed took away our freedom, our culture and destroyed our traditions and so as Travellers settled within a settled community we were lost through a system that did not care about us. I write on this as a platform to tell my story as it's still happening to this day. As a poet I find I can have a good input and educate both travellers and settled people alike what's really happening and as a way of dealing with issues which arise to this day and are not addressed properly so my poetry and stories have a place and a part to play. I also write to heal myself as I've gone through so much trauma as a child and as an adult that I want to share it out in the public places where Travellers issues matter and to bring to attention that travellers have so much to offer if only given a chance. I'm delighted that I have something to offer and what I have to offer comes from my lived experience. Thank you”
