Julie Merriman is an Irish artist based in Dún Laoghaire with an art practicecentred on drawing and how it is used to visually describe structure, place, concept and theory. Currently she is Artist in Residence at the College ofEngineering and Architecture,UCD. carriage return was created as the dlr Visual Art Commission 2018. It exploresthe connection between the language of drawing and other written, drawn andprogrammed languages currently used in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. People inthe county generously gave samples of the many types of language they usein formats that include; hand written or emailed prose, notes, lists, computercode printouts, recipes, poems, news articles and songs. Each language wasconsidered as an arrangement of marks and lines, examining the complexityand beauty of new and established forms of communication. The process of making the drawing is important to the development of thiswork and is informed by various forms of reprography (reproducing documentsthrough mechanical or electrical means). The work explores ideas of ‘copy’ and‘original’. By filtering arrangements of lines through outdated materials, such ascarbon paper or typewriter film, a continuing transmission of marks occur.
